Computer Vision Virtual Reality Mobile App

A virtual reality based mobile application premiered on Long Night of Science 2019, Berlin Germany.
 This App is designed to utilize virtual reality for interactive visualization of projects of computer vision and remote sensing group, Technical University Berlin, Germany. It starts with an introduction scene to acquaint users with the controls of the VR application when used with a cardboard viewer. Upon successful completion of the introduction tutorial the user can choose between four different scenes.
 Dinosaur & mammal skeleton scenes contain 3D reconstructions of skeletons from images acquired from various museums worldwide. Toronto city scene contains 3D city model of Toronto, Canada produced from photogrammetry. 
The last scene contains reference 3D reconstruction of the train station model from the crowd-SFM demo in LNDW 2019.

Virtual Reality as an immersive environment opens door for various possibilities in real world.

Virtual reality is a three-dimensional computer-generated environment which can be
explored using interactive feedbacks. A generic head mounted display focuses the content rendered on split screen using a bincovex lens. This restricted focused view facilities the user with an immersive feel of virtual surrounding. Modern mobile phones are VR ready with sufficient screen size and orientation sensors like accelerometer and gyroscope. When discussing about the scope of VR, gaming is just the tip of the ice-berg. VR is deployed for various applications, specially for environments which are realistically difficult to reproduce. Virtual reality technology has made significant contributions for training military personnel, astronauts, surgeons and athletes. With lots of investments pouring into technology, very soon VR would be omnipresent in all aspects of life.

„Dies war eines der spannendsten Projekte unserer Computer-Vision-Gruppe“, sagt Irina Nurutdinova von der TU Berlin, die die computer-basierte Visualisierung geleitet hat. „Man ist heute 3D-Animationen von Dinosauriern und anderen Tieren so gewohnt, dass viele Leute überrascht sein würden, wie viel Expertise für solche Rekonstruktionen immer noch notwendig ist. Während der Arbeiten waren wir mit vielen interessanten Problemen konfrontiert, die das große Potential von Computer-Vision-Forschung in diesem Gebiet zeigen. Die größte Herausforderung war es, zwischen der Automatisierung von Arbeitsschritten und Experten-basierter Handarbeit ein Gleichgewicht zu finden“, erzählt Irina Nurutdinova. Und Prof. Dr. Olaf Hellwich von der TU Berlin fügt hinzu: „Es ist faszinierend zu erleben, wie man mit modernen Techniken neues Wissen über fossile Lebensformen gewinnen kann.“[...]
